Fall Meeting! FPI's fall meeting will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum at Harkers Island. The meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. There will be a drawing for all members present to win a signed and numbered print of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse by Dr. Eva A. Thaller, a member of FPI. We will also elect officers for the next two years. Dr. Michael Rikard will join us and there will some Portsmouth artifacts on display. Make plans now to come! Homecoming Photos! A special thanks to Frances Eubanks and our webmaster, Hank O'Donnell, for getting these pictures uploaded and onto the site for all to enjoy. Ocrafolk Festival - June 2010 The Friends of Portsmouth Island had a successful booth in the Ocrafolk Festival at Ocracoke June 4-6, 2010. This was FPI's first time to have a booth at this very popular festival, and we met a lot of people and let them know about FPI and Portsmouth Island in general. Doctor's Creek Journal - Coming Soon! Submissions by members are always welcome, so please contact Rosanne Penley at epenley@charter.net if you have something you would like to have printed in a future issue. Don't miss our special Homecoming issue which will be mailed to all members soon. Be sure to keep your membership current so you will receive your copy! We hope to have them mailed the first week in August. Memberships If you have not yet paid your membership dues, you can still do so. A membership renewal form can be obtained by clicking on the "Membership" tab at the left. We thank those of you who have kept your memberships current by sending in your renewals. We also appreciate those who send donations to help us with our expenses. Non-paying members have received a final letter requesting payment for unpaid dues. If not received we will be forced to remove you from our mailing list and you will not receive our homecoming issue of the DCJ. We do not want this to happen. If anyone has a special situation and cannot pay, please let us know so we can help and work something out. If you are not already a member of FPI and wish to join, or you wish to re-join, please click on our Membership tab on the left and you will find the information you need. Congratulations Are In Order! Superintendent Russel J. Wilson is pleased to announce that Cape Lookout National Seashore's Voluneer Coordinator, Richard Meissner ,received the Helen Hartzog Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in the Enduring Service Category. Richard, in addition to serving as FPI's Vice President, volunteers with other groups including The Outer Banks Lighthouse Society, the CoreSound Waterfowl Museum, and Carteret Catch. As Volunteer Coordinator, Richard is responsible for recruting and scheduling the volunteers to work at 6 stations in the Park, including the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. historic Portsmouth Village, two cabin camps, and the Harkers Island Visitor Center. Richard received the award on May 13 at a ceremony at the historic Willard International Hotel in Washington, D.C. FPI appreciates Richard for all he has done and we're glad he is on our team!
